LITTLE SAIGON STORIES
SHINING LIGHT ON THE VIETNAMESE COMMUNITY OF CITY HEIGHTS AND SD LITTLE SAIGON DISTRICT
The Little Saigon Stories is a community arts program facilitated by Media Arts Center San Diego, the AjA Project, with the help of the El Cajon Boulevard Business Improvement Association. As a youth educational program, the Little Saigon Mobile Museum trains Vietnamese American youth to capture the stories of Vietnamese refugees and immigrants that make up San Diego’s designated Little Saigon District on El Cajon Boulevard. Such stories provide first-hand perspective on the process of migration, resettlement, and home-making amongst old and new residents who have chosen City Heights to call home.
The stories shared by Vietnamese American residents of City Heights will become a part of a multimedia art project created by students in the program, curated and exhibited to the public. Starting in fall 2018, the exhibition will be held at a minimum of three locations in the Little Saigon District, the greater City Heights and San Diego community, and in Little Saigon Foundation organized events. The stories will also be made available as an online digital archive.
All together, the exhibitiont seeks to foster community building, educate the public, and support the cultural promotion of the Little Saigon district. Additionally, Little Saigon Stories will act as a catalyst for cultural events, youth programs, oral history gathering programs, and other placemaking activities. Potentially, this project can open up dialogue about issues like refugee immigration, community development, economic growth, and influence other arts and placemaking projects in the Little Saigon Cultural District.
Chuyện của Little Sài Gòn là một chương trình nghệ thuật cộng đồng ra đời do Media Arts Center San Diego, AjA Project, với sự hỗ trợ của El Cajon Boulevard Business Improvement Association. Như một chương trình giáo dục thanh thiếu niên, Chuyện của Little Sài Gòn này nhằm đào tạo thanh thiếu niên Mỹ gốc Việt cách nắm bắt các câu chuyện về người tỵ nạn và di dân Việt, những người đã xây dựng nên khu vực Little Sài Gòn trên Đại lộ El Cajon. Những câu chuyện này giúp chúng ta hình dung những viễn ảnh ban đầu của quá trình di dân, tái định cư và an cư của các cư dân cũ mới, những người đã chọn City Heights này làm nhà.
Các câu chuyện chia sẻ bởi cư dân người Mỹ gốc Việt của City Heights là một phần của dự án nghệ thuật đa truyền thông do học viên của chương trình sáng tạo. Những tác phẩm này được đánh giá và trưng bày triển lãm công cộng. Bắt đầu từ mùa thu 2018, triển lãm sẽ được tổ chức ít nhất tại 3 địa điểm trong khu Little Sài Gòn, mở rộng ra ở khu City Heights toàn San Diego, và trong những sự kiện của Tổ chức Little Saigon Foundation. Những câu chuyện này cũng sẽ được lưu trữ và có thể tiếp cận trên mạng.
Chuyện của Little Sài Gòn sẽ tác động như một chất xúc tác cho những sự kiện văn hóa, những chuơng trình dành cho giới trẻ, những buổi gặp mặt trao đổi lịch sử truyền khẩu hoặc những hoạt động tụ điểm quần chúng. Một cách tiềm tàng, dự án này có thể mở ra đối thoại trên nhiều vấn đề như tỵ nạn - di dân, phát triển cộng đồng, tăng trưởng kinh tế, và ảnh hưởng lên nghệ thuật cùng những dự án tụ điểm quần chúng trong khu văn hóa Little Sài Gòn.
