PROJECT 2: UNDOCUMENTED

This project is designed to challenge your observation skills in relationship to photography and image-making. Learn how to use the camera, and other darkroom tools, to produce images of people, places and things that you believe go unnoticed. Use your acquired darkroom skills to produce full tonal range prints.

Part of our responsibility as photographers, is to share images and perspectives that can educate our society.  What are some people, places and things that you think others should know about?  Document what you think people need to know.  Collect a group of photographs that show a unique experience and knowledge that you acquire through observation.  Use the opportunity to learn about something new, or something that you've always wanted to learn more about.  Have fun and BE SAFE.  All project ideas must be discussed with the instructor.

DODGING is a SUBTRACTIVE process.  This will help you lighten things within the print during the initial exposure.  Here you can block the light in order to see things that may appear too dark.  You can use a dodging wand for this, make your own out of cardboard and wire.  You can also easily contort your hands to fit any pattern you want!

PROCESS is about how you will approach your project.  Consider your options:

 

Documenting a person.

  • What are you trying to highlight about this person, culture or group?
  • How can different design elements be use to highlight specific characteristics of people?

Documenting a place.

  • Is this a safe place to to photograph and do I need permission to be on site?
  • What points-of-view will highlight the special characteristics of this space?
  • What is unique about the space and what does it mean to you?

Documenting a thing.

  • Time of day / quality of light will be important in conveying the mood or use of your objects
  • Why is this object important and how do you plan to highlight this?
