INTRODUCTION TO CINEMA

College, Career, and Access Pathways (CCAP) offers high school students in the San Diego Unified School District to apply for dual enrollment at San Diego City College. This course is an introduction to the medium of cinema as a means of expression and communication. Instruction is provided through in-class viewing and analysis of films, lecture, and discussion. Topics include aesthetic and storytelling techniques, history of the industry, key inventors and artistic contributors, technology, international influences, and current developments. This course is designed for film, media, and communication majors. The CCAP partners with Monarch School, a local high school in Barrio Logan, serving justice-impacted youth in the cross border region of San Diego and Tijuana.

INTRODUCTION TO SCREENPLAYWRITING

College, Career, and Access Pathways (CCAP) offers high school students in the San Diego Unified School District to apply for dual enrollment at San Diego City College. This course is a study of the theory and practice of writing for electronic and film media. Emphasis is on preparing scripts in proper formats, including fundamental technical, conceptual and stylistic issues related to writing fiction and non-fiction scripts for informational and entertainment purposes. This course is intended for students majoring in radio, television and film and those seeking employment in the field. Work with the CCAP and Monarch Counselor to develop and secure programming that seamlessly prepares students to graduate and transfer directly to the San Diego City Colleges new  Digital Media & Journalism program.

SINGLE CAMERA PRODUCTION

This course is an introduction to the theory, terminology and operation of remote video production. Students work individually and in groups with emphasis on camera operation, production management, audio recording, and portable lighting. Topics include the fundamentals of camera lenses, production plans, outlines/proposals, and producing/directing on-location video production. This course is intended for students majoring in Radio, TV and Film, as well as anyone seeking employment in the field.This course is part of the A.S. degree program and can be used for transfer or skills development and enhancement. Required for a Certificate of Performance in Video Production or an Associate in Science (AS) Degree in Video Production or Broadcast News.

INTRODUCTION TO ART

College and Career Access Pathways (CCAP) Program at Southwestern College is an Advanced Scholastic and a Career and Technical Education Program that allows high school students in 10th through 12th grade to apply for dual enrollment at Southwestern College (SWC). This course provides a general introduction to visual arts that includes the study of theory, terminology, themes, design principles, media, techniques, interpretation, and evaluation of works of art across time and diverse cultures. Introduces skills needed for analysis of historical art context including defining and differentiating functions and methodologies of art history and art criticism. The CCAP partners with Eastlake High School, located in the Eastern region of Chula Vista, serving youth in the cross border region of San Diego and Tijuana.

DESIGN I (ONLINE)

Basic introduction to the principles and elements of design via Canvas Learning Management System. Students are provided a curated box of materials that are designed to work with asynchronous learning instructional videos. Facilitate virtual events and events discussions via VoiceThread. Provide synchronous online office hours and student support. This course provides a general introduction to visual arts that includes the study of theory, terminology, themes, design principles, media and is designed to prepare students for upper division classes.

FUNDAMENTALS OF DIGITAL MEDIA

A beginning level course designed to introduce the fundamentals of digital media. Students explore Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, AfterEffects, PremierePro and Figma to create a working website prototype for a product, company or cause of their choice. Focus on intentional design, web-ready media, for potential clients. Lectures include the instruction of all software and a critical analysis on technology and the impact it has on the aesthetics of design and the design as a career. This is an entry level course designed to lead students to upper division courses.

SEQUENTIAL MEDIA

An Intermediate level course designed to foster design challenges that merge across a variety of digital solutions. Students explore the intersections of Adobe Premiere, AfterEffects and Photoshop to create motion graphics for publication. Projects include but are not limited to graphic novels, comics, flipbooks, animations, typographics, documentary and fictional short films. Assignments engage a critical discussion on digital media, different solutions, and how their use impacts society. Strong emphasis on the exploration and meaning of different print and media solutions.

ALTERNATIVE PHOTOGRAPHIC SOLUTIONS 

This course is designed IN-PERSON and ONLINE for the students that are inspired by historical and contemporary photographic practices. Several alternative processes and techniques will be shared to give students hands-on experience with light sensitive chemistries and emulsions. Students will be introduced to alternative applications of  technology in photography, including cyanotype, xerographic, digitally created negatives, and the merging of digital and chemical techniques. Lecture will include a series of local artists that use alternative forms of image making. 

FILM + DARKROOM PHOTOGRAPHY

An introduction to the darkroom environment to students coming from a digital foundation of photography. Students learn to adapt their knowledge to film cameras, using 35mm SLR, medium format and large format equipment. Course covers basic black and white darkroom technique, with an integration of historical and contemporary techniques; cyanotype, vandyke, tintype, digital negatives and printing on experimental materials like fabric or wood. Assignments engage critical discussion about the tradition and craft of darkroom and relationship to contemporary digital art practice. 



BEGINNING DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY

Introduction to basic DSLR camera operation and shooting camera RAW. Course includes fundamentals of the digital darkroom, workflow, editing software and printing. Students how to edit and catalog files in Adobe Photoshop, Bridge, ACR and Epson Scan. Students learn how to operate small and large format printers with corresponding printer profiles. Assignments encourage students to explore alternative presentation methods using digital slideshows, self-publishing and outsourcing prepared files for canvas, wood, glass and other experimental materials. Strong emphasis on photography as a fine art.
